Home Stagers News Update 13/3/12
For me and many other Interior Designers the beginning of the year is traditionally dominated by the trade shows. It gives us a unique opportunity to update on industry news, preview new products and meet with our suppliers. This whirlwind of shows offers a fantasticbarometer of the market in general, not just as a style indicator, but as amanifesto for the forthcoming year! Some of these shows are absolutely vast and without a clear and determined plan it is easy to be totally overwhelmed and achieve little more than exhaustion! Having said that, I find the energy from the UK manufacturers is totally inspiring and restorative. I have a huge admiration for craftsmanship and find it frustrating that quality is often overlooked for mass produced glitz. However, I am pleased to report in recent years we have noted a resurgence of interest in quality and timeless classical designs that will stand the test of time. The trade shows on the whole very much reflect thistrend. It is a joy to meet withsuppliers who are interested to listen to feedback, and keen to adapt theirproduct to suit the market demands. It is no surprise that they are ones that seem to return year after year too.
One key interesting aspect to these arenas is the opportunity to visit the lecture theatres and listen to seminars from various market experts, last year for example at Birmingham Interiors there was a brilliant talk delivered from Mary Portas’ business partner Peter Cross of Yellow Door the retail consultants. This year at Birmingham Interiors Home Stagers Senior stylist Alison Stone and I saw Architect George Clarke’s presentation on maximising space at home, which was absolutely fantastic! George did a presentation on how he had tackled a major cellar excavation at home, definitely not for the faint hearted! There are also essential updates on technology and industry standards too which we all have a duty to keep abreast of.
This year we were also delighted to have been invited by the Society of British Interior Design to form part of a UK delegation of leading designers and architects to Macef Milan, which was huge by comparison. The interiors market is constantly evolving and it is imperative for us to keep up to date with emerging trends and these shows provide a unique opportunity to meet a large number of European manufacturers and suppliers in one destination and pick up hot new emergingtrends.
We can report that we have had a very busy start to the year with unprecedented enquiries from Estate agents and developers all looking for an edge into the property market. As we look forward to the traditionally busy Easter period our order books are looking good.
We continue to spread the word that for sellers to succeed in the property market the should remember the four P’s, Preparation, Presentation, Price and Promotion! |

Top Tips for Spring from Collette on how to maximise your outside space...
With Spring feeling more like Summer this year there really is no better time to turn our attention to the outside spaces that our homes have to offer. From kerb appeal to patios that can provide a valuable extension of our living space. I feel so enthusiastic talking about this as the reward for a weekend of hard work and a few pounds spent can be so dramatic!
If you are not lucky enough to have a stunning wisteria that wraps seductively around your porch take note; homes that are not especially attractive can look so much more appealing with a little time and effort. A well presented front garden and tubs of scented plants or topiary placed adjacent to the front door provide a charming welcome which serves a really excellent first impression to any potential buyers.
I am pleased to say that over the last few years I have seen more and more developers choose to invest more time and effort into landscaping their show homes to maximise the marketing appeal.
If you don’t have green fingers most Garden centres and even supermarkets now sell ready planted pots, so what could be easier? However, a word of caution; before you dash off for a touch of retail therapy, it is wise to tackle the tidy up operation first as this gives you the chance to plan ahead and stand back and assess the space available and check any remedial painting jobs that require touching up.Outside space to the rear of the property that is not dressed really is a missed opportunity. This is such valuable entertaining space and epitomises a style of living that we really have embraced in the UK over the last decade or so. This rise in popularity has provided an explosion of fantastic ranges of outside furniture and accessories in a huge variety of styles with everything from 1950’s retro beach stripes in candy colours to beaded parasols and cushions in exotic and sumptuous colours that are reminiscent of reams of silk from the Far East. This really is the one area that you can have fun, you don’t have to play safe with neutrals at all. Bright zingy colours outside on a sunny day seem to be naturally diffused by surrounding greenery and that is the trick to get this space to work well. Shrubs and hedges are preferable to fences as they lead the eye to any trees and shrubs in neighbouring gardens, visually ‘borrowing’ the landscape and making your garden appear to extend further, plus they provide natural habitat for birds and insects that make your garden thrive! When you move you can take your planters with you to ensure that your new house really feels like home in an instant! |
